How to do Dancer's Pose
An intermediate balance pose, step by step.
- 1Start in Mountain Pose (Tadasana) with your weight even through both feet.
- 2Shift your weight onto your left foot and fix your gaze on one steady point ahead.
- 3Bend your right knee, lift the right heel toward your buttock, and catch the inside of the foot or ankle with your right hand.
- 4Reach your left arm forward and up as a counterbalance.
- 5Press the right foot back into your hand to lift the thigh and open the chest, keeping the standing leg strong.
Alignment tips
- →Square your hips forward rather than letting the lifted hip splay open.
- →Hold a fixed gaze point (a drishti) to steady the balance.
- →Lift through the arch of the standing foot instead of gripping the toes.
Common questions about Dancer's Pose
What does Natarajasana mean?
Natarajasana comes from nata (dancer), raja (king or lord) and asana (pose) — the “Lord of the Dance” pose, named for Shiva in his form as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer.
Is Dancer Pose hard for beginners?
It's an intermediate balance. Beginners can loop a strap around the lifted foot and rest a hand on a wall until the balance and shoulder opening come.
Why can't I reach my back foot in Dancer Pose?
Usually tight shoulders or quads rather than the leg itself. Loop a strap around the lifted foot and hold that instead — you get the same shape while the front body opens over time.
Which muscles does Natarajasana work?
It strengthens the standing leg, ankle and core for balance, while stretching the shoulders, chest, hip flexors and thigh of the lifted side.
What sizes does the Dancer's Pose print come in?
Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
