How to do Crow Pose

An advanced balance pose, step by step.

  1. 1Squat with your feet together and place your hands shoulder-width on the floor.
  2. 2Spread the fingers and bend the elbows straight back, like a Chaturanga.
  3. 3Lift the hips and place the knees high onto the backs of the upper arms.
  4. 4Shift your weight forward until the feet feel light, gaze slightly ahead.
  5. 5Lift one foot, then the other, drawing the heels toward the seat.

Alignment tips

  • Gaze forward, not down — the body follows the eyes, and looking down tips you over.
  • Round the upper back and hug the knees in; place a cushion ahead of you while learning.

Common questions about Crow Pose

What does Bakasana mean?

Bakasana comes from baka (crane) and asana (pose) — the Crane, commonly called Crow Pose, an arm balance where the body perches on the hands.

Is Crow Pose about arm strength?

Less than people think — it's mostly balance, a rounded back and shifting your weight forward over the hands. Core and focus matter more than raw arm power.

How do I stop falling forward in Crow Pose?

Place a folded blanket or cushion ahead of you so fear doesn't hold you back, gaze forward rather than down, and hug the knees high onto the arms.

What sizes does the Crow Pose print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
