Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) is a beginner backbend pose. A small backbend with a big effect, named for the snake.

Bhujangasana comes from bhujanga (serpent or cobra) and asana (pose) — the lifted chest mirrors a cobra rising up.

How to do Cobra Pose

A beginner backbend pose, step by step.

  1. 1Lie face down, legs together, the tops of the feet on the mat.
  2. 2Place your hands under your shoulders, elbows hugged in toward the ribs.
  3. 3Press the pubic bone and the tops of the feet down to anchor the lower body.
  4. 4Inhale and peel the chest off the floor, leading with the breastbone.
  5. 5Keep a slight bend in the elbows, shoulders rolling down and back.

Alignment tips

  • Lift with back strength rather than a big push through the arms — keep some weight off the hands.
  • Keep the elbows bent and tucked; don't lock them straight.
  • Reach the tailbone toward the heels to lengthen the lower back instead of crunching it.

Common questions about Cobra Pose

What does Bhujangasana mean?

Bhujangasana comes from bhujanga (serpent or cobra) and asana (pose) — the lifted chest mirrors a cobra rising up.

What's the difference between Cobra and Upward Dog?

In Cobra the thighs and hips stay on the floor and the bend is gentle; in Upward-Facing Dog the legs lift off the mat and only the hands and tops of the feet bear weight. Cobra is the softer backbend.

Is Cobra Pose good for your back?

Used gently it strengthens the spinal muscles and counters hours of sitting and forward-folding. Keep the lift moderate and pain-free; with a back condition, check with a professional first.

Why does my lower back pinch in Cobra Pose?

Often from lifting too high too fast. Lower the chest, reach the tailbone toward the heels, engage the legs, and spread the backbend evenly along the whole spine.
