How to do Bow Pose
An intermediate backbend pose, step by step.
- 1Lie face down with your arms by your sides.
- 2Bend both knees and reach back to hold the outer ankles.
- 3Inhale and kick the feet back into your hands to lift the thighs and chest.
- 4Draw the shoulders back and lift the gaze.
- 5Rock gently with the breath if it feels good, then release slowly.
Alignment tips
- →Kick the feet back into the hands to lift higher rather than just pulling with the arms.
- →Keep the knees about hip-width so the lower back doesn't pinch.
Common questions about Bow Pose
What does Dhanurasana mean?
Dhanurasana comes from dhanu (bow) and asana (pose) — the body bends into a bow, arms drawn back like the string.
What does Bow Pose stretch?
The whole front body — chest, abdomen, hip flexors and quads — while strengthening the back. It's an energising, deep backbend.
What if I can't reach my ankles in Bow Pose?
Loop a strap around each ankle and hold the strap, or work one leg at a time (Half Bow). The shape opens up as the quads and shoulders loosen.
