How to do Lotus Pose
An intermediate seated pose, step by step.
- 1Sit tall with your legs extended in Staff Pose (Dandasana).
- 2Bend the right knee and place the right foot on top of the left thigh, sole turned up.
- 3Bend the left knee and draw the left foot onto the right thigh.
- 4Let both knees settle toward the floor and lengthen the spine upward.
- 5Rest your hands on your knees and soften your shoulders.
Alignment tips
- →Open the hips first with poses like Bound Angle and Pigeon — Lotus is a hip opener, not a knee bend.
- →Never force the knees; if they lift or ache, sit in Half Lotus or simple cross-legged (Sukhasana).
- →Swap which leg crosses on top from day to day to stay even.
Common questions about Lotus Pose
What does Padmasana mean?
Padmasana comes from padma (lotus) and asana (pose) — the crossed legs resemble an open lotus flower, the classic seat for meditation.
Is Lotus Pose bad for your knees?
It can be if you force it — the rotation should come from open hips, not the knee joint. If you feel any knee pain, back off to Half Lotus or Easy Seat. The knees should never strain.
How do I get more comfortable in Lotus Pose?
Open the hips with regular Bound Angle, Pigeon and Fire-Log poses, sit up on a cushion to tilt the pelvis forward, and build the depth over weeks rather than forcing it in one sitting.
What is Lotus Pose used for?
It's the traditional seat for meditation and breathwork (pranayama) — a stable, grounded base that lets the spine stay tall and the mind settle.
What sizes does the Lotus Pose print come in?
Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
