Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I) is a beginner standing pose. The grounded, lifted warrior — strength rising out of a long, steady lunge.

Virabhadrasana is named after Virabhadra, a fierce warrior created by Shiva — vira (hero) and bhadra (friend). The “I” marks the first of three Warrior variations, the one that faces forward with arms overhead.

How to do Warrior I

A beginner standing pose, step by step.

  1. 1From a lunge, set your back foot down at about 45°, heel grounded.
  2. 2Square your hips toward the front of the mat as much as you can.
  3. 3Bend the front knee over the ankle toward 90°.
  4. 4Press down through the back foot and sweep your arms overhead.
  5. 5Lift the chest and gaze forward or slightly up, shoulders relaxed.

Alignment tips

  • Ground the outer edge of the back foot so the back leg stays strong.
  • Let the back hip draw forward to square the pelvis without straining the knee.

Common questions about Warrior I

What does Virabhadrasana I mean?

Virabhadrasana is named after Virabhadra, a fierce warrior created by Shiva — vira (hero) and bhadra (friend). The “I” marks the first of three Warrior variations, the one that faces forward with arms overhead.

What's the difference between Warrior I and Warrior II?

Warrior I faces the front of the mat with the hips squared and arms overhead; Warrior II opens to the side with the arms parallel to the floor and the gaze over the front hand.

Why is squaring the hips hard in Warrior I?

The back leg's position naturally turns the pelvis. Shorten your stance slightly and lift the back heel less so the front hip can draw back and the back hip forward.

What sizes does the Warrior I print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
