How to do Mountain Pose

A beginner standing pose, step by step.

  1. 1Stand with your feet together or hip-width apart, weight even across both soles.
  2. 2Lift and spread your toes, then set them back down to root all four corners of each foot.
  3. 3Engage your thighs, lengthen your tailbone down, and stack your hips over your ankles.
  4. 4Lift through the crown of the head, letting the spine grow tall.
  5. 5Relax your shoulders down the back and let your arms hang, palms facing forward.

Alignment tips

  • Stand as if a string lifts the crown of your head toward the ceiling.
  • Keep the weight even — don't sink into one hip or roll onto the toes or heels.

Common questions about Mountain Pose

What does Tadasana mean?

Tadasana comes from tada (mountain) and asana (pose) — you stand still and steady as a mountain. It's the blueprint every standing pose is built from.

Why is Mountain Pose important if you're just standing?

It teaches the alignment and grounding that every other standing pose uses — even feet, engaged legs, long spine. Master it and the rest get steadier.

What does Tadasana do for posture?

It trains you to stack the joints, lengthen the spine and switch on the postural muscles, which carries over into how you stand and sit off the mat.

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
