How to do Triangle Pose

A beginner standing pose, step by step.

  1. 1From a wide stance, turn your right foot out 90° and your left foot in slightly.
  2. 2Extend your arms to shoulder height, then reach actively forward over the front leg.
  3. 3Tip from the hip and lower your right hand to your shin, a block, or the floor.
  4. 4Stack your left shoulder over the right and reach the top arm to the sky.
  5. 5Keep both legs straight and turn your gaze up toward the top hand if it's comfortable.

Alignment tips

  • Reach out and over before you lower down — find length first, then depth.
  • Use a block under the lower hand rather than rounding the spine to reach the floor.
  • Keep a micro-bend available in the front knee; don't lock or hyperextend it.
