How to do Forearm Stand

An advanced inversion pose, step by step.

  1. 1Start in Dolphin Pose, forearms on the mat shoulder-width, parallel.
  2. 2Walk your feet in toward your elbows, hips lifting over the shoulders.
  3. 3Gaze slightly forward between your hands and press firmly through the forearms.
  4. 4Lift one leg, then float the other up to meet it (practise at a wall).
  5. 5Stack the hips over the shoulders, reaching the legs up, core engaged.

Alignment tips

  • Learn it at a wall, and place a block between the hands to keep the forearms parallel.
  • Press the forearms down and lift the shoulders away from the floor so the weight stays off the head.

Common questions about Forearm Stand

What does Pincha Mayurasana mean?

Pincha Mayurasana comes from pincha (feather), mayura (peacock) and asana (pose) — the feathered-peacock pose, a forearm balance that arcs like a peacock raising its tail.

Is Forearm Stand harder than Headstand?

For many people, yes — there's no head on the floor to help balance, so it relies more on shoulder strength and control. Build it at a wall with a teacher.

How do I build up to Forearm Stand?

Strengthen the shoulders in Dolphin Pose, practise the kick-up at a wall, and use a block between the hands to keep the forearms parallel. Patience and the wall are the fast track.

What sizes does the Forearm Stand print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
