Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana) is a beginner forward-fold pose. Hang the head, soften the knees, let gravity do the work.

Uttanasana comes from ut (intense), tan (to stretch) and asana (pose) — the intense forward stretch, folding the torso over straight legs.

How to do Standing Forward Fold

A beginner forward-fold pose, step by step.

  1. 1From Mountain Pose, soften your knees and hinge forward from the hips.
  2. 2Let your torso fold over your thighs, hands to the floor, shins or blocks.
  3. 3Let the head and neck hang heavy.
  4. 4With each exhale, release a little deeper from the hips.
  5. 5Bend the knees as much as you need to keep the spine long.

Alignment tips

  • Fold from the hip creases, not by rounding the upper back.
  • Keep a generous bend in the knees if the hamstrings are tight — length first, straight legs later.

Common questions about Standing Forward Fold

What does Uttanasana mean?

Uttanasana comes from ut (intense), tan (to stretch) and asana (pose) — the intense forward stretch, folding the torso over straight legs.

Should my legs be straight in a Standing Forward Fold?

Not if it rounds your back. Bend the knees so the belly rests on the thighs and the spine stays long — straighter legs come over time.

Why does Standing Forward Fold feel good for the back?

Letting the torso and head hang gently decompresses the spine and releases the lower back and hamstrings, which is why it's used to calm and reset.

What sizes does the Standing Forward Fold print come in?

Three sizes: 8×12" (£19.99), 16×24" (£25.99) and 24×36" (£39.99). Every print ships unframed. Free UK shipping over £60.
